Job Description:   **PHLEBOTOMIST Saint Joseph East, Part-time** **Description** **Position Summary:** **Performs a variety of clerical duties and coordinatescommunications between departments. Performs blood collections frompatients when needed and assumes responsibility for safety and comfort ofpatients, following established standards and practices. Provides directpatient care to patients of all ages. Works in the Front Office performing allnecessary duties associated with dispatching the phlebotomists, answering thephones, ordering lab tests in the computer, checking the Order Monitor Log,receiving specimens into the Lab, delivering specimens to the varioussections of the Lab and any other duties associated with Front Officeresponsibilities. Also responsible for receiving specimens into the Lab fromthe tube system when needed and other processing duties as assigned.** **Qualifications** **EssentialDuties:** * **Afterreceiving an order from the attending physician, and in a quick and efficientmanner and by following established departmental policies and/or procedures andsafe work practices pertaining to specimen collection, preparation andanalysis, collect requested specimen(s) for analysis.** + **Ensure properlabeling, documentation and transport of specimens to maintain specimenquality.** + **Performanalytical testing using approved bedside testing equipment andprocedures.** + **Utilize theappropriate procedure, technique and material for each test orderedensuring that laboratory forms are correctly completed and patients areproperly identified.** + **Clean andstock phlebotomy tray and work area.** + **Comprehendand follow infection control and blood borne pathogen policies andprocedures.** + **Performtelecommunication activities to include reporting laboratory results,taking verbal orders, transferring calls, describing specimen collectionprotocols, esoteric test research, and troubleshooting issues.** + **Follow allsafety and emergency procedures and contribute to the efficient operationof the laboratory.** + **Documentcorrective actions taken when test systems deviate from the laboratory’sacceptable guidelines.** + **Enter testresults into the Laboratory Information System in order for standardizedreports to be generated for physicians review and interpretation.** + **Positivelyidentify patient(s) or specimen(s) on which procedures are performed with100% accuracy.** + **Performclerical duties which facilitate the flow of information through thelaboratory and to the caregiver.** **Requirements:** **Highschool diploma or equivalent education. Previous experience in ahealthcare setting and knowledge of Microsoft Windows and Microsoft Office ispreferred.** Effective September 1, 2017, current BLS through the American Heart Association, or a previously approved provider, will be required before employment. **Experience:** **Looking for applicants with at least one year of experience orcompletion of a recent phlebotomy course including an externship.** **License/Certification:** **For those hired after November14, 2016, KentuckyOne Health will verify education required by the position,through primary source verification, prior to beginning employment. Educationverification will also include the collection of a high school diploma orequivalent, transcript, or other written validation of education.** **Certificationas a Phlebotomy Technician (PBT) by ASCP or equivalent is stronglypreferred.** **BLScertification preferred.** **Adequateconversational English is required in order that the individual be able to takedirection from management, understand how to complete job tasks, communicateadequately with patients and co-workers as necessary, understand and followsafety guidelines, and understand the Associate Handbook and all hospitalpolicies.** **Working Relationships:** **TheLaboratory Technical Assistant is responsible to the Laboratory Supervisorand/or section Technical Manager and does not supervise any otheremployees. Is in daily contact with other associates, patients, nurses,physicians, and other healthcare professionals.** **PhysicalRequirements and Environmental Conditions: Must be able to performdifficult manipulative skills and tasks that require hand-eye coordination andarm-hand steadiness. Must be able to walk, stand extensively, lift 30lbs., remain in uncomfortable positions for a long time, visually discriminateclose objects and far away objects and colors, and distinguish and hear normalsounds.
