Job Description:   **Phlebotomist II-Reference Lab-Mercy Medical Center- FT (Days)** **Description** **GENERAL SUMMARY** **:** Collects blood specimens from patients vital for the diagnosis and treatment of disease for patients. Creates patient encounters, orders laboratory tests, and prepares specimens for testing. Assists technical personnel in sample log-in, workflow, and specimen tracking. May drive a company vehicle to outreach service areas. **ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS** **:** + Works independently as a member of the MercyClinical Laboratory outreach phlebotomy team at the Outpatient Testing Draw Stationor Patient Service Center. + Receives the physician request and performs venipunctures, heel sticks, and finger sticks from patients. + Properly identifies patients and promptly draws and correctly labels thespecimens while maintaining a pleasant relationship with patients, visitors,and staff. + Prepares specimens for transport, ensuringspecimen stability. + Ensures all proper documentation is on test requests or electronic order,as required for medical necessity or by department policies. + Cleans and stocks phlebotomy trays/and or carts, work area, and vehicle. + Supports andutilizes LEAN/Six Sigma principles/productivity standards to meet quality management goals. **MARGINAL FUNCTIONS** **:** + Trains new employees and students. + Operates a motor vehicle within the laws of the State of Iowa to performphlebotomy off-campus as required by the job. + Performs special department projects as designated. + Serves on hospital and laboratory committees as approved bysupervisor/manager. + In limited areas, performs therapeutic phlebotomy. **Qualifications** **MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ANDABILITIES REQUIRED** **:** + High school diploma or G.E.D. required. + Completion of certified phlebotomy course or 1 year previous phlebotomyexperience required. One year previousexperience with phlebotomy in the scope of practice may also be accepted, suchas Certified Medical Assistants, LPNs, and paramedics. + Valid phlebotomy certification required or obtained within 12 months ofthe date of hire. American MedicalTechnologists: www.americanmedtech.org at http://www.americanmedtech.org/ 3. National Center for CompetencyTesting: www.ncctine.com at http://www.ncctine.com/ 4. American Society for ClinicalPathology: www.ascp.org at http://www.ascp.org/ + Valid Iowa driver’s/Chauffeur’sLicense required.
