Job Description:   **Lab Assistant I - Lufkin (Full-time Days)** **Description** Position Summary: Responsible for skillful and appropriate processing, testing, storage and transport of laboratory specimens. Records all outpatient lab orders and assist outpatient nursing services with order entry of patient specimens. Processes routine send-out processing for reference laboratory work; assist with inpatient specimen processing and ordering if needed. May assist nursing service in the patient care areas with order entry, collection, and testing for patient specimens. Testing personnel as a generalist or in a specialized area within the lab. Knowledge of QC practices, instrument operation and maintenance, and result reporting. Knowledge of proficiency testing standards and practices. Responsible for organizing work load as assigned. Displays professional, safe conduct in all interactions. Maintains positive working relationships with staff, other departments, physicians and peers. Displays conduct in support of CHI St. Luke’s Health Memorial Mission & Vision. Position Responsibilities: 1. Quality – completes work with accuracy and thoroughness. 2. Professionalism – represents CHI St. Luke’s Memorial positively in actions and appearance. 11. Perform test order entry and patient registration. 12. Processes, transports and distributes blood and other samples for in-house testing and/or send out to reference labs, and Ensures appropriate specimen storage. 13. Responsible for responding to inquiries, and reference laboratories regarding test orders, specimen requirements and reporting. 14. Assist in training new employees and clinical personnel on specimen collection. 15. Performs routine clerical duties and computer functions associated with processing patient samples and results. 16. Answers the phone, receives and disseminates verbal and written communications related to laboratory services or personnel in a confidential manner. 17. Assists with data collection for quality assurance. 18. Assist in the accessioning of specimens, retrieves surgical pathology slides and blocks upon request. 19. Completes all required safety training programs, general safety, department/service safety, and specific job related hazards as required. 20. Collaborates effectively with lab co-workers to manage personal overtime for balanced productivity. 21. Recognize and identify root cause of problems, choose appropriately among resolution alternatives, collaborate with others and implement solutions as appropriate. 22. Responsible for inventory of supplies. 23. Attends departmental meetings/ hospital continuing education and Participates in department and hospital activities. 24. Ensures that all outpatient requisitions include all required information (diagnosis, physician signature, etc.). 25. Adheres to CHI St. Luke’s Health Memorial policies, including but not limited to “CHI Values & Ethics at Work”, HIPPA, PHI, ePHI, Privacy Rule, and confidentiality. 26. Maintains safe work habits; adheres to safety rules; immediately reports any unsafe condition; immediately reports any incident / injury. 27. Supports department-based goals and contributes to the success of the organization. 28. Performs duties in accordance with that of hospital policies and procedures, and regulatory agency guidelines. 29. Performs other duties as assigned. **Qualifications** Minimum Qualifications: Education Level Required: High School Diploma or Equivalent (GED) & Completion of an approved, accredited formal training program or Meets the CLIA requirements for experience in lieu of education as follows: “If in 1971, the technologist was performing the duties of a Laboratory technologist at any time between July 1, 1961 and January 1, 1968, and has had at least 10 years of pertinent laboratory experience prior to January 1, 1968. This required experience may be met by the substitution of education for experience, or achieves a satisfactory grade in a proficiency examination by TDHHS (Texas Department of Health and Human Services). or “Previously qualified as a Technologist/Technician under 42 CFR 493. 1433 published in March 14, 1990” Licensure/Certification Required: Certified Phlebotomist through a nationally recognized accredited agency (i.e. AMT, ASCP, ASPT) & CPR/BLS certification (through an approved AHA program) Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities * Detail Oriented * Strong organizational skills * Ability to communicate effectively with others * Critical thinking skills * Testing personnel as a generalist or in a specialized area within the lab. * Knowledge of QC practices, instrument operation and maintenance, and result reporting. * Knowledge of proficiency testing standards and practices.
