Job Description:   **Phlebotomist-Phlebotomy-Mercy Medical Center-PRN (10p-7a)** **Description** **GENERAL SUMMARY** **:** Collects patient blood specimens which are vital for the diagnosis and treatment of disease as appropriate for patient age to include neonates, infants, children, adolescents, adults, and geriatric adults. Assists technical personnel in clerical duties, sample log-in, workflow, and specimen tracking. **ESSENTIALFUNCTIONS** **:** + Receives the physician request; properlyidentifies patients; collects blood specimens from patients; and promptly drawsand correctly labels the specimens. + Uses developed scripts for specified patientinteractions and maintains a pleasant relationship with patients, visitors, andstaff.. + Accurately performs venipunctures, heel sticks,and finger sticks, ensuring proper specimens for testing as well as ensuringpatient safety. Ensures delivery of thespecimens to the processing area as soon as possible to maintain specimenquality. + Followsestablished procedures and policies to obtain optimal test turn-around-times. + Uses a computer to review and receive laboratoryorders. + Handles incoming and outgoing telephone calls utilizingexcellent customer service skills. + Proficiently uses office equipment to provideclerical support and maintain files. + Cleans and stocks phlebotomy cart and maintainswork area. + Meets defined workload productivity standards. Supportsand utilizes LEAN principles. + Fully understands and is committed to providingquality service to all clients, both internal and external. **MARGINAL FUNCTIONS** **:** + Functionsas a team leader in absence of a team leader. + Trainsnew employees and students. + Performsspecial department projects as designated. + Serveson hospital and laboratory committees as approved by supervisor/manager. **Qualifications** **MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE,SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED** **:** + High school diploma or G.E.D. required. + Completion of certified phlebotomy course, 1year previous phlebotomy experience, orsuccessful completion of phlebotomy courses as part of another degree orcertificate program required. + Proof ofcompletion of Mandatory Reporter abuse training specific to population served within3 months of hire. **Job** Laboratory **Primary Location** IOWA-DES MOINES-MERCY MEDICAL CENTER **Daily Schedule** 10p-7a **Scheduled Hours per 2-week Pay Period** 0 **Weekends Required** Occasional **Req ID:** 2017-R0129956
