Job Description:   **Phlebotomist I, Saint Joseph East, Full-time** **Description** **Position Summary:** Performs a variety of clerical duties and coordinates communications between departments. Performs blood collections from patients when needed and assumes responsibility for safety and comfort of patients, following established standards and practices. Provides direct patient care to patients of all ages. Works in the Front Office performing all necessary duties associated with dispatching the phlebotomist's, answering the phones, ordering lab tests in the computer, checking the Order Monitor Log, receiving specimens into the Lab, delivering specimens to the various sections of the Lab and any other duties associated with Front Office responsibilities. Also responsible for receiving specimens into the Lab from the tube system when needed and other processing duties as assigned. Essential Duties: * After receiving an order from the attending physician, and in a quick and efficient manner and by following established departmental policies and/or procedures and safe work practices pertaining to specimen collection, preparation and analysis, collect requested specimen(s) for analysis. + Ensure proper labeling, documentation and transport of specimens to maintain specimen quality. + Perform analytical testing using approved bedside testing equipment and procedures. + Utilize the appropriate procedure, technique and material for each test ordered ensuring that laboratory forms are correctly completed and patients are properly identified. + Clean and stock phlebotomy tray and work area. + Comprehend and follow infection control and blood borne pathogen policies and procedures. + Perform telecommunication activities to include reporting laboratory results, taking verbal orders, transferring calls, describing specimen collection protocols, esoteric test research, and troubleshooting issues. + Follow all safety and emergency procedures and contribute to the efficient operation of the laboratory. + Document corrective actions taken when test systems deviate from the laboratory’s acceptable guidelines. + Enter test results into the Laboratory Information System in order for standardized reports to be generated for physicians review and interpretation. + Positively identify patient(s) or specimen(s) on which procedures are performed with 100% accuracy. + Perform clerical duties which facilitate the flow of information through the laboratory and to the caregiver. **Qualifications** Requirements: High school diploma or equivalent education. Previous experience in a healthcare setting and knowledge of Microsoft Windows and Microsoft Office is preferred. Effective September 1, 2017, current BLS through the American Heart Association, or a previously approved provider, will be required before employment. Experience: Looking for applicants with at least one year of experience or completion of a recent phlebotomy course including an externship. License/Certification: For those hired after November 14, 2016, KentuckyOne Health will verify education required by the position, through primary source verification, prior to beginning employment. Education verification will also include the collection of a high school diploma or equivalent, transcript, or other written validation of education. Certification as a Phlebotomy Technician (PBT) by ASCP or equivalent is strongly preferred. BLS certification preferred. Adequate conversational English is required in order that the individual be able to take direction from management, understand how to complete job tasks, communicate adequately with patients and co-workers as necessary, understand and follow safety guidelines, and understand the Associate Handbook and all hospital policies. Working Relationships: The Laboratory Technical Assistant is responsible to the Laboratory Supervisor and/or section Technical Manager and does not supervise any other employees. Is in daily contact with other associates, patients, nurses, physicians, and other healthcare professionals. Physical Requirements and Environmental Conditions: Must be able to perform difficult manipulative skills and tasks that require hand-eye coordination and arm-hand steadiness. Must be able to walk, stand extensively, lift 30 lbs., remain in uncomfortable positions for a long time, visually discriminate close objects and far away objects and colors, and distinguish and hear normal sounds. May be exposed to blood, body tissues and fluids, other hazardous waste materials, dust, chemicals, and unpleasant or strong odors.
