Job Description:   **Critical Care Tech - Emergency Dept. : Lakeside Hospital (PRN)** **Description** **POSITIONPURPOSE:** Assists the professional nursing staff, private and Emergency Department physicians in providing care to patients in the Emergency Department. Performs clerical and receptionist duties and maintains the physical environment of the area. Performs Phlebotomy and EKG’s. Functions within the Shared Governance organization. **ENVIRONMENT:** Alegent Health is a not-for-profit umbrella corporation providing governance, administrative management and direction to all operations of Bergan Mercy Health System (sponsored by Catholic Health Initiatives) and Immanuel Medical Center (Immanuel Health Systems). These two health systems have consolidated operations while maintaining separate religious identities, financial assets and medical staffs. Consolidated operations include five acute-care metropolitan hospitals located in the Omaha-Council Bluffs metropolitan area; three rural hospitals located in Missouri Valley and Corning, Iowa and in Schuyler, Nebraska; one long-term care facility located in Omaha; one ambulatory service facility at Lakeside in Omaha; minority owner of community hospital in Blair; home care programs serving the region; multiple metropolitan and rural health care clinics/offices; major programmatic initiatives in managed care, physical medicine and rehabilitation, behavioral health, senior services, cardiovascular services, orthopaedics, women’s and children’s services, and oncology; and joint ventures with community partners in pediatrics and hospice. **NATUREAND SCOPE:** The incumbent reports directly to the OD-Emergency. **PRIMARYACCOUNTABILITIES:** 1. Performs procedures which do not require the skill, knowledge or judgement of a licensed professional and which may be safely delegated in accordance with nursing policies and procedures. 2. Accurately enters physician's orders and utilizes a CRT to input data and retrieve information at the request of the physician or RN. 3. Maintains appropriate stock and equipment inventories in the unit and appropriately charges/credits for items used. 4. Assists in the admission, discharge and transfer process as directed. 5. Assists in the maintenance, care and disposition of properly labeled specimens. 6. Assures patient safety and comfort through regular rounds, environmental maintenance and other appropriate safety measures. 7. Maintains and promotes a professional attitude by providing support and assisting co-workers and other team members in the delivery of patient care. 8. Establishes and maintains interpersonal relationships with patients, visitors and other hospital personnel while assuring confidentiality of patient information. 9. Demonstrates the ability to perform in an accurate and precise manner in crisis and emergency situations. 10. Complies with internal and external regulations, policies and procedures. Participates in achieving nursing division goals and support Shared Governance structure. 11. Assumes responsibility for personal and professional growth through participation in unit meetings, inservice programs and continuing education programs, and fulfills yearly requirements as stated by policy. Assists in the orientation of new staff and participates in unit Quality Improvement activities. 12. Participates in all safety, security and infection control programs that are mandatory as well as those required and provided by the department. 13. Demonstrates work practices consistent with Alegent Health and department-specific safety, security and infection control policies. 14. Authorized to make entries in the medical record, consistent with and limited to the scope of the job duties and any applicable licensure. 15. Must have ability to work effectively and collaboratively in a diverse and multi-cultural environment. **Qualifications** **QUALIFICATIONS:** **EDUCATIONAND LICENSURE:** Required: BLS or BLS instructor certification is required upon hire. Acceptable credentialing bodies and certifications include the following: American Red Cross: CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer, American Safety and Health Institute: CPR, PRO, must say “Professional Level-with AED”, and American Heart Association: Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers. Preferred: EMT-A and Nursing Assistant certification. High school diploma or equivalent. **EXPERIENCE:** Required: None. Preferred: Six months to one year experience as a nursing assistant. **KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:** Excellent oral and written communication and an ability to work with a variety of people with different educational and cultural backgrounds. Knowledge of instruments and their use and an understanding of sterile technique, knowledge of emergency treatments, ability to take vital signs and make observations, and an understanding of medical terminology is preferred. Job requires continuous verbal communication skills.
